I met Gene when we began working together about seven years ago, and remained in touch after I moved on to another company. 15. I was in shock and so heartbroken to hear about Gene’s sudden passing. I’ve had the privilege of knowing Gene through working at the rectory for many years. He was a kind and compassionate man, who has dedicated his life to helping others in their time of need. I am grateful for his friendship and kindness throughout the years and during my cancer treatments. I will miss his humor and thoughtfulness, especially during Christmastime. Gene would always send me a big box of chocolates every year. Gene’s faith was an unshakable one, even until the very end. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the Kummerer family, Saint Vincent De Paul, and the St. Pascal congregation. There is certainly going to be a deep void at St. Pascal. Heaven is a better place because he is there.
Gene, I will miss you immensely.
Sending healing prayers and peace, Jenica Nieves

  19. To Gene’s family, friends and parishioners, I send my sympathy and I am sorry that I could not attend the services. I would like to share a few of my memories of Gene. I met Gene when he and I were 17 year old college freshman assigned to live on a floor of mainly older students, along with our mutual friend Steve Greenfield. We immediately bonded over our shared identity of being New York City newcomers raised far away in big Catholic families and being assigned to work study jobs in the college cafeteria. I quickly came to appreciate his quick wit, ironic sense of humor and kindness. Almost immediately, Gene broadened my appreciation of modern music and introduced me to the downtown NYC music scene, including shows at CBGB’s and the Palladium. Among other adventurers fit to print, I recall a Mets-Cubs baseball game, going to see the Pope at Yankee Stadium and a Thanksgiving dinner at the Cattleman restaurant after watching the inflation of the Macy’s balloons.
Although we saw each other infrequently after Gene moved out of New York a year or two after college, we stayed in consistent touch over the decades since. I was always struck by Gene’s passion for his hometown that was always on display when I visited Chicago. My wife Susan and I particularly recall a night of blues and jazz clubs and dive bars that made us feel like we were more than mere tourists.
On those visits and indeed the entire time I knew him, Gene’s love for his family always was strongly evident. I know that you feel his loss deeply but, hope that you can take comfort in knowing that he loved you and lived a good life. .
