Candace (Magdirila) David

Candace (Magdirila) David

Candace (Magdirila) David, 92, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026 surrounded by family. She was born on July 6, 1933, in La Union, Philippines, to Astor and Juliana Ebreo.

Candace was the beloved wife of the late Osias Magdirila and the late Lorenzo David, a loving mother to Noel Magdirila and Dolly York, and proud step-grandmother to Christine (J.M.) Joy Magdirila. She was an adoring aunt and grandmother to many cherished nieces and nephews.

Growing up surrounded by Episcopal Church Missionary Nuns, Candace developed a deep faith that guided her throughout her life. After graduating from college, she dedicated over 35 years to serving the Philippines Diocese of Episcopal Church Offices and its affiliates.

In the early 1990s, Candace moved to Chicago, where she discovered her true calling as a caregiver. For 29 years, she touched countless lives with her compassion and dedication, earning the love and respect of her patients, as well as their families. She was known for her loving and caring spirit, which brightened the lives of all who knew her.

She loved everyone she met, and in return, they loved her just as much. She was filled with happiness and joy in the company of her family and friends. She loved to garden and enjoyed visiting any places with flowers. She especially had a love for orchids. Even as the years passed, her energetic spirit for dancing and enjoying music never slowed her down. In her later years, though dementia touched her life, she remained the beautiful and humble woman her family and friends had always cherished.

Candace was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands.

Services: Viewing will take place at St. John Episcopal Church, 3857 N. Kostner Ave., Chicago, IL 60641, on Sunday, January 18, 2026, from 2:00 pm until 3:30 pm.

A Funeral Service with Eucharist will begin at 3:30 pm.

A reception in the Parish Hall will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the family for financial assistance with final expenses.

I will never forget Auntie Candy. She was the sibling of Papang who was closest to our lives. From the time she was still at St. Luke’s and even after she went abroad, she never failed to check on us and ask how we were doing.

When they came for vacation in 2019, she was so happy. She even said that it might be her last visit, especially when we were able to go home to Cotabato, to Nuro, Upi.

Auntie, you can now rest peacefully. All the people you kept asking about, you are all together again in heaven, reunited with your siblings.

Rest in peace, Auntie. I will miss your calls so much. I can still hear you saying, “Celen, ikaw ba yan?”

Thank you, Auntie, for all the help and love you gave us. We will miss you deeply, and we love you very much.

Lola Candy was more than a grandmother; she was a source of love, laughter, and strength. Her compassion and generosity guided our family through our most difficult times, and for that, we will forever be grateful.

Lola Candy was such a loving and compassionate grandma. When I was small, I remember that every time we visited her in Quezon City, she would laugh at me because I was a cute toddler who loved to sing and dance. I often saw her and Lolo Osias laughing at me together. She would hug me and always gave me candies and chocolates.

When I grew up and she had already moved to the U.S., every time she came back to the Philippines and I asked her what she wanted, she would always say, “Gusto ko ng gulay na may bagoong. Namimiss ko ang alugbati at saluyot.” To be honest, I didn’t know how to cook those dishes, but thankfully I have a tita who knows how to prepare bulanglang or dinengdeng.

Another memorable moment with her was during one of her vacations here in the Philippines, when she developed severe allergies and was hospitalized. I was given the opportunity to look after her overnight at the hospital, and we spent that time bonding and sharing stories. That experience became one of my most cherished keepsakes with Lola Candy.

Lola Candy was very generous, and I will never forget how she was there for us during one of the lowest moments of our lives. She extended her help without expecting anything in return. Lola is no longer with us, but her legacy will live in our hearts forever. Salamat and mahal na mahal ka namin, Lola Candy.

Ninang Dolly and Tito Noel, please know that you are constantly in our prayers. We’re sending you our warmest hugs and all our love. Be strong and hold on to God’s promises—He will never leave you nor forsake you.🩷

Love,
Reena, Lloyd, Lirhy and Leeroy Lequin

Lola Candy will always be remembered for her kind and generous heart. Our family was always warmly welcomed into their home and she helped us in so many ways. We are truly thankful to God for the blessing of having her in our lives.

The last time she visited the Philippines in 2019, she was full of life, bubbly, joyful and dancing during our family reunion. Seeing her so happy, surrounded by loved ones, reminded us of the joy she carried and how deeply she was loved by our relatives.

We are so proud of her for raising her children with strength and sacrifice. Her life was a reflection of love, service, and faith, and her kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.

We take comfort in knowing that she is now resting in God’s loving presence.

Rest in peace, Lola Candy. You will always be remembered with love and gratitude. 🤍

A Tribute to Our Loving Grandmother, Lola Candy

You lived well and finished the race, Lola Candy.
Today, we celebrate your life—a life lived with purpose, love, and quiet strength.

You were generous and selfless beyond measure. Our family will forever remember the unconditional love and support you gave us, especially during our most difficult times. When the road was uncertain, you stood firm for us. You and Tita Dolly were the ones who encouraged me to study BS Nursing, believing in me even before I fully believed in myself. You supported me not only with words, but also financially, never expecting anything in return.

Now that I am here in the UK, pursuing a career in the healthcare industry, I see clearly that this journey is one of my answered prayers—made possible because of your sacrifices, guidance, and faith in me. Your kindness planted seeds that are still bearing fruit today. Truly, you gave without counting the cost.

You were joyful and light-hearted, with a warmth that filled every room. Your gentle spirit, kind demeanor, and ever-present smile brought comfort and happiness to everyone around you. Your laughter was contagious, and your love for family was evident in everything you did. You made people feel seen, welcomed, and loved.

You were also a woman of great strength. You served and worked for decades in the healthcare sector, a calling that demanded endurance, patience, and compassion. Now that I walk a similar path, I understand how tiring and challenging that work can be—yet you remained steadfast and persistent. You embraced your calling wholeheartedly, serving others with humility and grace.

Lola Candy, your life was a living example of love in action. Your legacy lives on in our family, in the lives you touched, and in the values you passed down to us. You may have finished your race, but your love continues to guide us.

Rest well, Lola Auntie. You are deeply loved, dearly missed, and forever remembered. 🤍

Tita Dolly and Tito Noel,
We are grieving with you in this season. May you find comfort in the many precious memories you shared with Lola Candy and strength knowing how deeply she was loved and appreciated. May the Lord surround you with overflowing comfort, grace, strength, and peace in the days ahead.

Declaring this powerful Truth in your lives, Tita Dolly and Tito Noel,

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
— Matthew 5:4
